Ει βούλει καλώς ακούειν, μάθε καλώς λέγειν, μαθών δε καλώς λέγειν, πειρώ καλώς πράττειν, και ούτω καρπώση το καλώς ακούειν. (Επίκτητος)

New Research: The Tensions Shaping Baby Boomer Travel

The Tensions Shaping Baby Boomer Travel

Baby boomers are a reliable customer for the travel industry, but they can also be hard to understand. They control more discretionary wealth than any other generation, but they class themselves as budget travelers who seek value in every dollar spent.

They take more trips than other generations, but when financial pressure rises, they are the most willing to ditch the trip completely, rather than reassess their plans with a new budget. They want to pass wealth to their children, but don’t want to wait, so they’re leveraging funds earmarked for inheritance now, for once-in-a-lifetime extended-family experiences.

Underneath all these tensions is a desire to make the most of the time they have, to check off their bucket lists and enjoy the freedom of their golden years, before mobility and caregiving realities catch up to their ambitions. Baby boomers aren’t done traveling… not even close. And travel brands that win them over will be able to understand the difference between what they say and what they do.

This report is based on a Skift Research survey of 570 U.S. Gen X and baby boomer travelers, fielded in July 2026. It examines baby boomer behaviors, expectations and preferences in travel, and unearths the key tensions that define their relationship with the travel industry.
