NYC tourism needs more international visitors for full recovery

New York City tourism is generating a record $4.9 billion in tax revenues.

Tourism related spending by visitors to NYC topped $48 billion. NYC topped $48 billion.

That marks a 16% rise since the pandemic but the total number of visitors still remains below pre-Covid levels.

The tourism data comes from a report by State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli’s office.

Last year, the city welcome more than 62 million tourists, which is 7% down on 2019.

DiNapoli cites the slower recovery of international inbound markets, especially China.

“As we look ahead, the city’s ability to attract and draw visitors from overseas will be key for a full recovery for the industry,” DiNapoli said.

“One example, we’ve seen fewer visitors coming from China. Chinese tourists spent the most, on average, during pre-pandemic tourism trends.”

He said travelers from China that are coming are spending less on average now.

“International visitors account for about 20% of total visitors.”

Also the rise of remote working has certainly impacted the business travel market and  the conventions business.
