TAWTO encourages gender equality in tourism in Tanzania

 

Called Tanzania Association of Women Tour Operators (TAWTO), having its foundation in Tanzania’s northern safari capital of Arusha, the association aims to create a gender equality program in the $2.6 billion tourism sector.


Ms. Elizabeth Mwakajila,TAWTO Chairperson said that tourism is still a male-dominated business;hence, they thought it to be vital to starta women’s association to encourage women’s empowerment and adopt practical measures to take part in tourism policies, arrangements and procedures. She said this during the organization’s induction on April 14, this year.


The association has 40 founding associates who are entirely women tour operators in Tanzania. Mwakajila said that TAWTO’s participation comprises an assorted involvement of women coming from various educational and socio-economic upbringings who have fought tremendously hard to make their presence felt in the male-dominated sector.


Mwakajila added that they have consistently triedshaping the voice of women in the tourism business to match the determinations of Tanzania’s forerunner woman President, Dr.SamiaSuluhu Hassan.


TAWTO will also work hard toward boosting the tourism sector focusing on preservation in addition to encouraging women, particularly young girls, to make a move in the business by imparting them with knowledge on tourism and community growth.


The main idea is to make sure that tourism stays an important foreign exchange earner in Tanzanian economy. Tourism needs to be encouraged and advanced in a sustainable way and must assist the local communities, said Mwakajila.
