This autumn, The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort, invites travellers to experience Messinia at its most inviting, where milder temperatures welcome days spent outdoors, time in nature and the region’s living traditions. Set amid olive groves overlooking the Ionian Sea at Navarino Dunes, the resort brings together longevity-led wellness, an exceptional sporting offering and authentic cultural experiences, all within a region shaped by 4,500 years of history.
An active playground
Guests of The Romanos have access to four world-class signature golf courses, set against the sea and the Messinian landscape. Europe’s first Mouratoglou Tennis Center offers 12 tennis courts, alongside three padel courts, two pickleball courts and one squash court. Beyond the resort, guided hikes and cycling routes lead through the countryside, giving guests the chance to explore olive groves and coastline at an easy autumn pace.
Authentic Messinia, from tree to table
Few experiences capture the spirit of the region like the olive harvest. From mid-October, guests can take part in the age-old tradition alongside local growers, learning every step from collecting the olives to visiting a local olive press, before tasting the freshly pressed extra virgin olive oil. The harvest takes place within Navarino Dunes or at nearby groves.
Guests can also join an “Olive Oil Tasting Experience” led by a world-renowned expert, learning how to discern aroma, texture and quality in Messinia’s celebrated oils. An enhanced version pairs four distinctive Greek olive oils with seasonal accompaniments such as bread, olives, cheeses and dark chocolate.
Myth, history and landmarks
Messinia is deeply woven into the story of Homer’s Odyssey, and the resort’s cultural programme brings that heritage to life. The Messinian Odyssey explores the Homeric landscapes and Mycenaean world of King Nestor, centred on the Palace of Nestor, the best-preserved Mycenaean palace in Greece, with its frescoes and Linear B tablets. Available in 4-hour or 6.5-hour versions, the journey continues to the Pylos Archaeological Museum and Niokastro Castle, with the longer option adding Voidokilia Beach and Nestor’s Cave. It concludes in the port of Pylos, recently the docking site of the wooden trireme used in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
Further afield, guests can travel to Ancient Olympia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and birthplace of the Olympic Games, with an optional visit to a sculptor’s studio for a hands-on introduction to marble carving. Other experiences include a treasure-hunt tour of Ancient Messene, a visit to Methoni Castle followed by a coastal cruise towards the Sapientza Islands, and a Philosophy Walk on Homeric themes led by a Professor of Ancient Greek Literature. For a quieter evening, Astronomy Nights offer guided stargazing beneath skies with virtually no light pollution.
Longevity, rooted in place
At the heart of the wellness offering is Anazoe Spa, whose philosophy draws on the teachings of Hippocrates and the rhythms of Messinia. Its newly enhanced approach introduces science-led diagnostics and personalised programmes through two dedicated pathways.
The Longevity Compass focuses on biological renewal, beginning with the PNOE Metabolic Analysis System, which offers personalised insights into oxygen utilisation, cardiovascular efficiency and metabolic health. This can inform a tailored treatment pathway, complemented by NEXA AI Skin Analysis. Signature therapies include the Helsi Ice Plunge, a guided cold-water immersion at 5–10°C, alongside a Heat & Ice Experience Area with sauna, herbal steam baths, Scottish showers and ice-grotto therapy, as well as hydrotherapy pools, pressotherapy and lymphatic drainage.
The Kinetics Flow is designed for active guests, with physiotherapist-led treatments focused on mobility, recovery and injury prevention. These include Golfer’s Body Preparation, Physio Deep Tissue Massage, Myofascial Release Therapy and Percussion Massage, ideal after a round of golf, a day on the court or a ride through the countryside. Olive oil, described by Hippocrates as “the great therapeutic”, also features in Anazoe’s oleotherapy® rituals, while movement sessions such as yoga, Pilates and breathwork extend wellbeing across the wider destination.
Whether guests come to restore, to play or to explore, The Romanos offers a considered balance of all three, in one of the Mediterranean’s most storied landscapes.
