Avianca, part of Grupo Abra, will operate the Barcelona–Abu Dhabi route on behalf of Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, using Boeing 787 aircraft. This operation marks Avianca’s first entry into the UAE market under a wet lease agreement, known in the aviation industry as ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance), while Etihad will market the flights under its own airline code.
This agreement is part of the strategic partnership announced by Grupo Abra and Etihad Airways on July 21 in Farnborough, United Kingdom, through a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening connectivity between Latin America, the Middle East, and Asia by leveraging the combined networks of Etihad and Avianca.
Through this operation, Avianca brings its long-haul flight expertise and the quality of its crews to one of the group’s strategic partners. It also demonstrates how Abra’s platform enables its airlines to leverage their complementary capabilities to support the growth of their partners and create value for passengers.
