The historic touchdown at Penang International Airport was celebrated with a water salute, a special welcoming performance, and goodies for the arriving passengers, highlighting the warm hospitality Penang is known for.
The new route officially begins operations on 26 June 2025 and will fly twice weekly, every Thursday and Sunday, enhancing accessibility and convenience for both leisure and business travellers between the two culturally rich UNESCO-listed cities.
Established in 2017, Cambodia Airways has achieved impressive growth in a relatively short time. As the country’s only local airline offering high-quality business-class and full-service flights featuring Khmer characteristics, the airline currently operates a fleet of six Airbus A319/A320 aircraft. To date, it has completed over 17,000 flights, safely transporting more than 1.7 million passengers and accumulating over 35,000 flight hours.
In 2024 alone, the airline served over 620,000 passengers and expanded its network to 22 domestic and international destinations. This direct air link opens up new avenues for tourism, trade, and bilateral collaboration between Malaysia and Cambodia, further strengthening regional ties. “We are thrilled to welcome Cambodia Airways to Penang,” said YB Wong Hon Wai, Penang State EXCO for Tourism & Creative Economy (PETACE). “This new direct flight not only strengthens connectivity between Penang and Phnom Penh but also reflects growing demand and confidence in Penang’s appeal as a preferred destination for both business events and leisure.”
The Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB) also welcomes this enhanced connectivity, which is expected to stimulate more business events movement between the two destinations. With Phnom Penh currently connected to 14 destinations via 27 flights, this new route adds a vital access point for corporate and incentive groups from Cambodia and beyond. PCEB is actively targeting the incentive travel segment and looks forward to working with stakeholders to promote Penang as a leading destination for high-impact international business events.
