Waldorf Astoria New York reveals the design of its iconic Grand Ballroom

The iconic Waldorf Astoria New York has just revealed the interiors of perhaps one of its most iconic spaces - the Grand Ballroom - an Art Deco room with such a profound history, having hosted the world from Queen Elizabeth II to Mick Jagger and countless legendary events from Prince Rainier III of Monaco and Grace Kelly’s engagement party, President John F. Kennedy’s birthday gala, the April in Paris Ball, and annual galas such as the Viennese Opera Ball, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

A space capable of evoking such nostalgia, at a time when we eagerly await an echo of the roaring 20s and the return of weddings, concerts, galas etc, below you can see the first look inside this 15,000 square foot room which, as one of the largest ballrooms in New York city will accommodate over 1,000 people once complete in 2023. With a striking selection of future and past images of this space, I wondered if you are interested, for which I can share the high res versions well as any further comment or insight from the architects bringing this to life.

The development team with the help of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill is dedicated to returning the space to its opening day splendour and the specifications intended by architects Schultze & Weaver in their original 1931 design. At the time of delivery, Schultze & Weaver’s vision for the Grand Ballroom – a singular space with a luminous ceiling that floats above - couldn’t be fully realised due to contemporary technological limitations, placing even further significance on this reveal which finally brings to life the original architects’ vision. This transformation will see design elements such as the central chandelier removed - a feature which was later added to provide supplemental lighting - to the reveal of the central ceiling medallion from 1931.

Designated a New York City interior landmark, the heritage of this ballroom will be preserved for years to come, allowing for the next generation of New Yorkers to enjoy global celebrations in the reinvigorated Grand Ballroom and bridging a gap between New York's past and its future. Advanced bookings will open in the coming months.

The Waldorf Astoria New York is currently in the midst of a full restoration which will see it introduce 375 residences in 'The Towers of the Waldorf Astoria' which will sit atop 375 hotel suites allowing individuals to buy an official home for the first time ever inside this indelible piece of history.
