Tanzania’s domestic & regional tourism

Perfect for rural, domestic and regional tourism in East and Southern Africa, the World Bank-funded Resilient Natural Resource Management for Tourism and Growth project is about to start in Tanzania.

Implementation of the six-year Resilient Natural Resource Management for Tourism and Growth features the development of community-based tourist projects that would help in giving power to the local communities in participating on various tourism activities.

REGROW project is primarily aiming on the development of tourism programs for the local communities living at close proximity to the wildlife parks in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. Here, tourism and tourist businesses are not much developed.

Making the most of the rich tourist attractions, majorly wildlife and nature, REGROW project will draw Domestic Tourism for local Tanzanians, Regional Tourism for visitors from Southern African states, and international tourists.

Southern Tanzania is a new tourist circuit all geared up for growth and expansion, mostly aiming on the regional tourists from Malawi, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, South Africa, Rwanda and Burundi.

Under implementation at present, REGROW project is focusing on the development of tourist infrastructure as well, like the roads and transport services to enter the wildlife parks in Southern Tanzania. These parks have poor support infrastructure compared to those in Northern Tanzania Tourist Circuit.

Northern Tanzania Tourist Circuit draws regional tourists from East African states in addition to the foreign tourists through Kilimanjaro International Airport in Kilimanjaro and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, Kenya.

Tanzanian Deputy Minister for Tourism Mr. Constantine Kanyasu has explained that among the areas under REGROW Project is the recently set up Nyerere National Park in Southern Tanzania. In East Africa, it is the biggest wildlife protected park covering 30,000 Square kilometers within Selous Game Reserve.
