Reyes Maroto, the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Spain, is pretty much sure that in 2021, the tourism sector in the country will witness a “rebound effect if confidence recovers”.
She emphasized that this effect would occur by taking into account that by 2021, the vaccine against the coronavirus would be introduced.
The minister assured in a recent interview that the financial recovery is “underway”, even though in an uneven way, by different territories and sectors, which have particularly impacted tourism in Spain.
She mentioned that it’s her belief that tourism at present is facing “a disastrous situation”, which is the reason it has been tremendously tough to get the volume of tourists well enough as the travel corridors have reopened.
To quote Maroto, “The data is there, there is an insufficient volume of international tourists to talk about reactivation. That is why we are talking about maintaining the ERTE of force majeure.”
About 10.78 million visitors, between January and June 2020, had crossed the borders and entered the country, compared to 38.12 million during the same time in 2019. This implies a disaster of 71.7 per cent.
“In July an expectation of reactivation was generated, but the outbreaks and the increase in the contagion curve made us begin to quarantines, restrictions on mobility and that has generated a lack of confidence from tourists.”
She also described that it’s of tremendous importance to set the minds of commoners at ease in terms of the coronavirus and let them understand that they can “consume, travel and have certain normality”, and that the sector is slowly gaining momentum in the country
Due to the pandemic, the horizon of the recovery of the losses is up to two years, since when there is a vaccine “the rebound effect in Spain will be faster because the value of tourism will grow quickly”, said the minister.
