Here are a two more safety initiatives you can expect as mainstream cruise operators build up steam. This follows the discovery of the virus on four cruise ships hoping to restart the industry in the last few weeks. As I have reported before, MSC is going to be operating from the end of this month in Europe. Before anyone boards however they will undergo a mandatory COVID-19 swab test along with the standard security process. “We have equipped all the cruise terminals with medical stations where guests will be swab tested,” a spokesperson said.
MSC will also be giving its wristband aboard MSC Grandiosa sailings from Genoa a new and important role in the detection of the virus. In the past, the wristband has been used to complete transactions onboard and to perform functions like opening stateroom doors.
That will continue but it will also serve a contract tracing app. In the event of a COVID-19-positive case onboard, contacts of the infected individual can quickly be identified and isolated to prevent further spread, a spokesman added.
