Today, a Global Review for Tourism report was published. The report took a note on the measures of 217 destinations across the globe. The research pinpointed that for international tourism purposes, seven destinations have eased their travel restrictions so far. At the same time, many countries are still in talks in regards to the re-opening of borders. The report shows that 100% of all destinations all over the world have expressed some form of travel restrictions in regards to the pandemic. In addition, 75% of the destinations as of 18 May 2020 have kept their borders sealed for international tourism.
To quote UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili, “The timely and responsible easing of travel restrictions will help ensure the many social and economic benefits that tourism guarantees will return in a sustainable way. This will contribute to the livelihoods of many millions of people around the world. The sector is a driver of sustainable development and a pillar of economies. UNWTO stresses the need for vigilance, responsibility and international cooperation as the world slowly opens up again.”
