Spanish tourism is literally witnessing a corona virus ‘tsunami’ with ‘no new bookings’ at some hotels with the disease making its presence in the country.

Occupancy rates at Spanish hotels have fallen radically, with some hotels left empty due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

“A tsunami has arrived. A meteorite has fallen on us and we have to see how we survive,” said CEHAT Secretary General Ramon Estalella, urging the Spanish government to take emergency measures to avoid bankruptcies and layoffs at hotel companies.

Spain’s cabinet has approved creating a 2.8 billion Euro aid package to help regional authorities alleviate the economic impact from corona virus, said Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

Sanchez also announced a 1 billion euro contribution to the health ministry’s budget, along with 14 billion Euros in liquidity for small and medium companies.

The increase in corona virus infections brought the total to 2,968 cases in Spain up from 2,140 on Wednesday evening, with fatalities going to 84 from 48 within the same time frame.

Madrid has borne the brunt of the crisis with 1,388 infections and 38 death cases.
