The National Tourism Development Committee has been set up to boost the growth of one of the most important economic drivers of Cambodia. A sub-decree on the development of the committee was signed by Prime Minister, Hun Sen, on Nov 22nd, as per a statement issued on Friday by the Ministry of Tourism. One of the country’s deputy prime ministers will chair the new body, the Khmer Times reported, adding Tourism Minister Thong Khon will be the permanent vice-chairman.
The new body will have four other vice-chairmen – Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol, Minister of Industry and Handicrafts Cham Prasidh, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts Phoeurng Sackona, and Minister of Environment Say Sam Al.
The outstanding members are secretaries of states and other high-ranking officials. There are 34 members in total. The committee is entrusted with drafting policies to control the sector along with conducting research that can aid the industry to develop sustainably.
It will called together twice a year in meetings presided over by the chairman or the permanent vice-chairman. Of late, the Ministry of Tourism has requested other ministries and public agencies to work together with the private sector to develop the tourism industry.
