The San Francisco International Airport today recognised the 20th Anniversary of the first Transgender Day of Remembrance.

SFO held its first-ever transgender flag-raising ceremony to remember all those who have been killed because of their gender identity.

In addition to lighting the front of the International Terminal and the Air Traffic Control tower in pink, white, and blue, the transgender flag was raised as a symbol of remembrance. SFO’s official flag poles are located in front of the Harvey Milk Terminal 1.

“SFO’s mission is to provide an exceptional airport in service to our communities, all of our communities,” said Jeff Littlefield, Chief Operating Officer. “SFO is taking steps to create an inclusive environment for our guests and our employees. In addition to changing City related paperwork and badges to reflect preferred names, our brand guidelines have been updated to reflect preferred pronouns, and we have published a transgender and gender non-conforming traveller resource page on our website.

The ceremony was attended by approximately 30 people, including airport staff, the San Francisco Fire Department, and representatives from The Mayor’s Office of Transgender Initiatives and the Transgender Law Center.
