Security officers screened more than 108 million (108,558,233) passengers and crew between March 14 and April 28 as per Transportation Security Administration (TSA) data. TSA examined over 63 million (63,374,469) checked bags nationwide. It was a 4.7 per cent increase over the same period last year. TSA set a new screening record during the 2019 spring travel period.

Although the volume of individuals screened was notably high, 97.2 per cent of all passengers waited less than 20 minutes at the checkpoint. 92.4 per cent of passengers who were in a TSA PreCheck lane waited less than 5 minutes.

On an average travel day, Transportation Security Administration screens around 2.2 million passengers and crew per day. On the busiest days during the spring travel period, security officers can screen 400,000 more passengers than usual.

Patricia Cogswell, TSA deputy administrator, commended the dedication and professionalism of the TSA officers and the commitment of the security partners.

TSA’s 10 highest volume airports during the spring travel season from March 14 to April 28 are as follows:
The LAX – 5.3 million (5,346,065); JFK – 4.2 million (4,217,614); ORD – 3.9 million (3,861,182); MCO – 3.4 million (3,403,609); ATL – 3.4 million (3,362,467); SFO – 3.3 million (3,329,832); LAS – 3.1 million (3,091,162); EWR – 3.0 million (3,039,476); MIA – 2.9 million (2,921,531); DEN – 2.9 million (2,917,890).

Earlier, Transportation Security Administration had said that an estimated record 107 million passengers will travel during the spring break between March 14 and April 28, 2019.
