Medway tourism sees a surge, generates £333 million a year

As per a new research and figures from 2017 tourism in Medway is on the rise and the industry is currently worth £333 million a year after having a growth of 6.2 %.

The study was commissioned by the tourism website Visit Kent that revealed the number of day trips to the town grew by 6.3% to 4.4 million and the value went up by 6.7%.

The total number of jobs supported by tourism grew by 6.1% to 6,488, and the industry accounts for &% of total employment in Medway. There were half a million overnight stays there.

Council cabinet member for community services Cllr Howard Doe said that in 2017 we hosted an extensive programme of events and activities  marking 350 years since the Battle of Medway.

Thousands of visitors from across the UK and abroad were attracted due to the action-packed celebrations.

Medway’s historic attractions like the Eastgate House and the Historic Dockyard Chatham received funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

He was pleased that more people than ever before were visiting Medway and discovering what they had  to offer including the award winning parks, shopping centres, free festivals and events as well as our historic castles and buildings.

In 2017 Kent welcomed 65m visitors and the visitor economy went up by 7% to £3.8 billion.
