Winter sees the Canadians heading south to popular tourist destinations like Mexico, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

These countries are popular holiday destinations for many, but most of them find mention on the travel advisory website of government of Canada, with a warning to women.

Global Affairs Canada recently issued advisories for a list of countries where women have reported being sexually assaulted, in some cases by resort staff. There is a report that four Canadian women were sexually assaulted at Hotel Riu Republica resorts in the Dominican.

Under the advisory, women may be at risk of having their drinks or food spiked with drugs. They may be raped or sexually assaulted, and the perpetrators could be anyone from taxi drivers and resort staff to fellow tourists.

Advisory for spiked food and drinks has been issued for Anguilla, Antigua And Barbuda, Bahamas, British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos, and Costa Rica.

Advisory for Crime has been issued for Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago.

Advisory for Women’s Safety has been issued for Bahamas, Bonaire, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Costa Rica, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, and Virgin Island (U.S.)
