easyJet, the UK’s largest airline, is now trialling mobile boarding passes. Flights departing from six airports will be included in the trial – London Stansted, London Southend, Manchester, Edinburgh, Amsterdam and Nice.
Passengers travelling from the airports included in the trial can now to check-in in less than 10 seconds, download and store their boarding passes on iPhone and Android phones.
Peter Duffy, Marketing Director for easyJet, commented:
“We are really pleased to be trialling mobile boarding passes - we know from passenger feedback that it will be a popular addition to our award-winning app. Building on the success of the app, which is the fastest airline app on the market, mobile boarding passes is the next important step in our aim to make travel easy and affordable.
“Following a successful trial, we will be working with each of the airports in order to rollout the function across the network. The trial will also be extended to include multiple boarding passes on the same device so that families can all check in using one or a number of mobiles, depending on their preference.”
Designed to be simple and easy to use, it offers passengers peace of mind by displaying their status as ‘checked in’ or ‘not checked in’. Once boarding passes have been downloaded they are stored offline so no network coverage or wi-fi is required and no roaming charges will be incurred. The app also has Apple’s popular Passbook functionality so that customers can easily store boarding passes for upcoming trips in one, convenient place.
The easyJet app can also recognise if a passenger has checked in on a computer through easyJet.com and allows them to download the boarding pass without needing to check in again. Boarding passes can be downloaded from between 30 days and two hours before the flight departs.
Since its launch in late 2011 more than 4.5m people have downloaded the easyJet app. The app is free and suitable for both iPhones and Android smart phones enabling passengers to search fares, book flights and much more while they are on the move via their phones. Recent additions to the app include enabling passengers to pre book their own seat, ability to add a bag to their booking and in 1 click, to view hotels in their destination.
The trial will be extended to include mobile web to cater for windows phone 7/8 and Blackberry devices later this year.
