According
to 2012 third quarter results, travel
to Mexico on
Expedia group sites worldwide grew more than 20 percent compared to
2011, with Cancun being the most popular.
In
addition, Cancun was also recognized as America’s top travel
destination for 2011 by Orbitz Travel Index.
The
Orbitz Insider ranking is based on all air bookings made on
Orbitz.com for
travel between January 1 and December 31, 2011.
According to Orbitz, it was “warm climates and adventure
activities” that most enticed vacationers to travel abroad; making
Cancun an obvious choice for many.
Expedia’s
recognition comes on the heels of Cancun experiencing one of the best
summer seasons in recent years with an approximate 88% hotel
occupancy rate. New hotels in the destination have also increased
interest in new amenities and all-inclusive options
like Secrets The Vine and the
Hard Rock Cancun, not to mention extensive
renovations to properties like that of Moon Palace Golf & Spa
Resort and LIVE Aqua Cancun.
While
guests still enjoy Cancun’s renowned beaches and
thrilling water activities, events like the first ever Holbox
Gastronomic Festival and cultural celebrations like the Day
of the Dead have enticed millions of visitors to
enjoy the vast array of offerings in the region.
Mexico
remains a popular destination among Expedia and Hotels.com consumers
worldwide with the majority of international demand for Mexico coming
from travelers in the US, Canada and Brazil. Travelers from South
Korea, Finland and New Zealand are the fastest growing group. With
more than 500 daily flights arriving to Cancun International Airport,
convenient accessibility makes traveling to Cancun easier than ever.
“Increased
interest in Cancun is sure to continue till the end of this year due
to fascination over the end of the Mayan Calendar on December 21,
2012. Tourists from all over the world can enjoy not only Cancun’s
resorts and renowned hospitality, but the nearby Mayan attractions it
offers like the pyramids of Chichen
Itza and
Coba, the recently opened Maya Museum and the array of activities and
events that celebrate the beginning of a new era,” said Jesus
Almaguer, CEO of the Cancun CVB. Visitors can also welcome in the New
Year with Grammy Award-winning Usher at Moon Palace Golf & Spa
Resort on December 29 or visit Mamitas in nearby Playa del Carmen on
December 31 to see David Guetta in concert.
