Spa pools at Auckland Council’s leisure facilities treated

Following the detection of Legionella bacteria in two spa pools in the council’s network, spa pools at Auckland Council’s leisure facilities have been given an additional chemical clean as a precautionary measure.

A spa pool at the Tepid Baths was closed on 11 February following the detection of the bacteria, and treated according to procedures recommended by the Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS).

The pool will only be reopened once negative test results have been returned, which is likely to take two weeks.

This follows a similar incident at the Manurewa Pool and Leisure Centre in December. As with the Tepid Baths, the spa pool was closed, treated and retested, and only reopened once a negative test was returned.

The Manukau pool continues to undergo regular testing for the bacteria. Results from the second round of testing were received on 16 February and remain negative.

Auckland Council’s Manager Leisure, Rob McGee, says that in both cases the team acted on advice from council’s own environmental health team and ARPHS and immediately closed and treated the spa pools affected.

“As this is the second event in a three-month period, we have taken the additional precautionary step of treating all 18 of our spa pools.

“On top of that, over the course of the next few weeks, we’ll be working on a programme to ensure that every spa pool in the network undergoes an extra deep clean,” says Mr McGee.

New Guerlain spa at One&Only The Palm introduces exclusive signature treatments

Following the recent launch of Guerlain Spa at One&Only The Palm in Dubai, guests are invited to relax and indulge with three exclusive signature treatments: “Dubai Harmony”, “Solar Evasion” and “Désert d’Orient”- designed for discerning guests to Guerlain Spa at One&Only The Palm.

The prestigious House of Guerlain has designed the treatments in partnership with One&Only The Palm to bring pure indulgence and the quest for beautiful skin to spa and wellness aficionados in Dubai. The launch of Guerlain Spa at One&Only The Palm represents the first time signature Guerlain treatments have been made available in the United Arab Emirates.

The three exclusive therapies include “Dubai Harmony”, a vitality boosting treatment with hot and cold touches, “Désert d’Orient”, a true oriental treatment journey which can be experienced in the Spa Suite either alone or with a loved one, whilst finally the “One&Only Solar Evasion” is a sensory and relaxing face and body treatment which prepares the skin for tanning and prolongs a healthy glow.

The three unique therapies are available for guests in the exquisite setting of Guerlain Spa at One&Only The Palm where every treatment is transformed into a unique and personal occasion and epitomises the essence of the Guerlain experience, the perfect union of effective know-how and aesthetic expertise.

Designed to appeal to discerning guests and visitors to the spa, the first therapy is the 90 minute “Dubai Harmony”. This signature experience is the perfect balance between treatment and massage and creates an incredible feeling of wellbeing and lightness. By alternating between hot and cold temperatures, the skin is regenerated, the complexion illuminated and tissues re-oxygenated. A sequence of flowing manoeuvres with draining effect stimulates reactivation of the circulation and relieves the body of any muscle tension.

Meanwhile the 120 – 150 minute signature journey “Désert d’Orient” begins with the application of the Silk Indulgence Milk Scrub and a Guerlain body wrap. Following true oriental tradition, guests then enter the steam room to experience the purifying and cleansing effects whereby toxins are eliminated and muscles are soothed. Followed by a personalised massage with one of the four Guerlain scented Massage Elixirs, this treatment leaves the skin soft and silky and guests experience a feeling of sheer relaxation. Guests will experience “Désert d’Orient” in a dedicated Suite, a temple of serenity where each treatment unfolds step by step. A sanctuary of wellness, the Suite is the perfect place in which to enjoy a treatment either alone or with loved ones.

Finally, the 90 minute “One&Only Solar Evasion” is a sensory and relaxing face and body treatment which prepares skin for tanning and prolongs a healthy glow after soaking up the sun. A smoothing exfoliation leaves the skin cleansed, refined and silky soft. Followed by a soothing massage with Terracotta “Huile du Voyageur” oil, the masterful ballet of soft and harmonious massage therapy provides a profound sense of absolute relaxation and escape.

Since its creation in 1828, Guerlain has drawn inspiration from nature and its many wonders to formulate its excellent fragrance, make up and skincare. “The new personalised Guerlain treatments further add to the unique guest experience at One&Only The Palm in Dubai. We have taken the time and expertise to provide tailored offerings that are specific to each of our guest’s needs with the continued aim of redefining luxury and delivering a world of indulgence and relaxation,” commented Vincent Smarrella, General Manager at One&Only The Palm.

Spanning 2,400m², the Spa features nine treatment rooms, a relaxation room, a private swimming pool and an inviting lounge for guests to continue their ultimate spa experience. There is also a fully contained couple suite, complete with double scrub room and shower, private steam room, two separate soaking baths, two treatment beds, as well as a private lounge area. A secluded VIP entrance, private lobby area and garden terrace ensure the ultimate in privacy.

One&Only The Palm is located on the peninsula of one of the world’s most spectacular landscapes offering a secluded enclave of impeccable style. Amidst lush manicured gardens, fountains and pools along the sparkling shore, guests can enjoy the true beauty of the resort. Blending Moorish and Andalusian architectural design with a contemporary Arabian chic interior style, One&Only The Palm is a Dubai luxury resort which evokes a sense of understated elegance and distinctive luxury featuring immaculate gardens, cascading fountains, vaulted spaces and a rhythmic symmetry.

“We are truly delighted with the spa facilities at One&Only The Palm and its distinctive architecture which complements Guerlain’s timelessness. Our products are the perfect combination of exceptional efficiency and unrivaled sensoriality. The prodigious longevity of rare orchids, the healing power of bee products, and the whitening action of natural pearl: Guerlain uses its unique expertise to study, select and combine the most highly effective natural ingredients to create its products, which we are pleased to now also offer at One&Only The Palm in Dubai”, added Laurent Besse, Guerlain General Manager in The Middle East.

Hotel spa departments generate healthy profits

BOSTON, MA. – Hotel spa departments continue to contribute to the revenue and profit growth of U.S. hotels. According to the 2015 edition of Trends in the Hotel Spa Industry, hotel spa department revenues increased by 5.1 percent in 2014, while spa department profits grew 10.5 percent.

“The benefit of having a hotel spa can go beyond the direct financial contributions of the spa department,” said Andrea Foster, managing director for PKF Consulting|CBRE Hotels (PKFC) and director of the firm’s spa and wellness consulting practice. “When we compared the performance of spa properties with comparable hotels in PKFC’s Trends in the Hotel Industry database, we found that the spa hotel sample had a higher ADR in 2014 and was able to increase its room rates to a greater degree. This does not suggest causation; rather, it suggests a reasonable conclusion that guests find greater value in properties that have more extensive amenities and services available, thus creating the ability to increase rates to a greater extent.”

Spas also can help position a property as a healthy hotel if it also offers beneficial lifestyle options within other departments – rooms, food and beverage, retail and more – that support guests’ desire to maintain a healthy routine. “More and more travelers want to maintain their fitness and nutrition routines while on the road,” Foster added.

PKF Consulting|CBRE Hotels has surveyed the profitability of U.S. hotel spa performance for nine years. The annual review compiles 19 discrete revenue and expense items within spas operated by U.S. hotels. Not included in the survey are hotel spa operations that are leased to an outside party, day spas or destination spa properties.

Spa Revenues
Spa revenues increased by 5.1 percent for the overall survey sample, but differences were observed based on property type. Spas operated within urban hotel properties enjoyed a stronger 7.0 percent gain in revenue, compared to 4.4 percent at resort hotel spas. “This is consistent with the strong performance of the primary urban markets and the return of group demand,” Foster noted.

The new Meadowood Spa opens November 2nd

ST. HELENA, CALIF. - At the close of 2015, Meadowood Napa Valley will be substantially through a $60-million dollar renovation, which includes a now fully renovated nine-hole golf course, redesigned guest rooms property-wide and a brand new luxury all-suite Meadowood Spa debuting this month for guests and Members and led by Director of Spa & Wellness Michael Conte.

Architecture & Design
The new Meadowood Spa was designed by architect Howard Backen and his team at Backen, Gillam & Kroeger Architects, led by David Macneill and interior designer, Leslie Hemmings. The building itself was constructed and brought to life by Bob Eberlin and his team from Eberlin Construction, whose company began construction on the building in January 2014. The style of architecture reflects and respects the landscape: simple, rustic-modern structures with a strong connection to beyond the building itself, with natural elements flowing throughout. The color palette includes warm greys and browns, deep muted olive green, rustic black and natural flax textured linen.

Paying respect to its natural surroundings of Meadowood, a majestic oak tree is preserved and celebrated at the Spa's entrance with an amazing hand-forged circular iron fence guarding its perimeter and flanked on both sides by two boutiques. The reception area features warm oak flooring, reclaimed wood beams, hand-applied textural plaster and a fireplace with hand-forged steel. The space offers simple, clean upholstered furniture covered in organic linens, earthy leather and warm, natural rustic pieces. Special local and international artisanal touches include a silk rug from Tibet and handmade pottery from Napa Valley ceramic artist Emil Yanos, combined with curated, antique accessories from Napa Valley and around the world.

The calming, organic-feeling is enhanced by handmade Shibori Rust Silk wall hangings from artist Patricia Vivod that grace the walls of the locker room hallway and entrance. Nature-inspired wood, steel and stone fountains also line the treatment walkway where guests make their way to the treatment suites. The eight suites, each of which includes a private bathroom and steam shower, offers an inviting, built-in seating lounge area filled with comfortable cushions and pillows situated in front of large sliding windows that open out to forested views, heightening the sense of complete relaxation.

All-Suite Treatment & Wellness Experience
The new Spa offers a unique, all-suite concept, creating an elevated spa experience and giving guests a true sense of retreat and privacy. Meadowood Manager of Health & Fitness Kerry Brackett, whose history with the property and long-standing connection to its guests and members, helped shape the concept and direction for the Spa, with Conte taking the helm in June 2015. Brackett continues her passion for fitness and wellness at Meadowood and is currently undergoing training to be a Certified Wellness Coach.

The resort also worked closely with renowned spa and wellness consultants Nancy Nemer of Red Cashew Inc and Anni Hood of Wellness Business Consultancy. Nemer's thorough understanding of the design process and spa operations was instrumental in contributing to the concept creation, planning and technical specification, as well as curating treatment product lines and items for the Spa Boutique and Estate Boutique. Hood introduced the team to the world of wellness, transforming the dynamic of what is expected from a spa treatment into a true wellness journey for guests, offering tips and suggestions for how to incorporate wellness into their lives after they leave the Spa.

Each guest's visit will begin with an in-depth conversation with a Spa Therapist in the privacy of the treatment suite. The conversation will determine a curated treatment plan for each individual. The suite experience will begin with a soothing signature tea and include a pre-treatment experience (aromatherapy steam shower, dry body brushing or foot bath), followed by the treatment plan created with the therapist concluding with a post-treatment organic elixir. The space is designed to perform every treatment and includes all amenities needed so guests will not have to relocate or move during their spa day unless they choose to use the relaxation gardens.

There are two relaxation gardens, one for women and one for men. Each features sitting areas, steam room and sauna and mineral soaking pool. These areas are open for Spa guests pre- or post-treatment.

Thermarium build the largest spa in Norway

BUCH IN TIROL, AUSTRIA - Thermarium strengthens its position as a global key player in spa planning and realisation.

One of the most outstanding projects is the Kongeveien Eiendom Spa Complex in Norway, now rebranded to "THE WELL". The largest spa facility in Norway is funded by a private investor and is scheduled to open in December 2015.

The overall planning area of the project amounts to 10.500 sqm, with 6.500 sqm of Day Spa area.

Thermarium has brought its entire range of know-how and expertise to this project. This includes the overall concept, the engineering and interior design services as well as the final construction.

"On The Well project Thermarium has added unique know how and superior quality, and at the same time showed great flexibility in a complex constructional project," says Thomas Gundersen, project manager, THE WELL.

Some of the project's highlights are the pool areas, which have been designed as a lavish landscape, and a shower grotto featuring a realistic stream with several trickles of water cascading down the sides of the rock grotto.

The hot rooms entice guests to explore the spa as it creates a unique and interesting well-being ambiance. The art deco area, for instance, will feature a pool and a steam room designed with state-of-the-art materials and a highly creative interplay of different shapes and colours.

In a world of lights the Aurora Laconium features shifting lighting moods that enhance relaxation, while the Ambilight Cinema Sauna provides visual well-being with lights on a TV screen.

The Japanese area with its distinctive design and finishes offers unique well-being experiences in a sauna, steam room, fire room and a meditation room. A Turkish bath / Hamam serves as a secret haven for guests paying for this treatment.

This project is unique in its appearance and constructional complexity in all of Norway and reflects the recent growth and development of the country's spa industry.

Alice Waters to receive ISPA’s Humanitarian Award

The International SPA Association (ISPA) will present Alice Waters with the 2015 ISPA Alex Szekely Humanitarian Award at the 25th annual ISPA Conference & Expo at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Nev. from October 19-21, 2015.

Waters is a chef, author, food activist and owner of Chez Panisse. Waters has been a champion of local, sustainable agriculture for more than four decades.

“ISPA is thrilled to recognize Alice for her many years of hard work in advocating for locally grown fare,” said ISPA President Lynne McNees. “Alice’s passion for feeding the world is so inspiring and her work impacts so many of us.”

Waters was chosen based on her extensive work as founder of The Edible Schoolyard Project, an innovative model for public education that integrates the growing and cooking of food into the core academic curriculum.  The centerpiece of the mission is to promote a free, nutritious and sustainable school lunch for all students, K – 12, and to bring children into a new relationship to food.

Waters’ vision for edible education began 20 years ago with The Edible Schoolyard at Berkeley’s Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, which today draws visitors from around the world. The online Edible Schoolyard Network gathers and shares lessons and best practices from school gardens, kitchens, and edible education programs worldwide.  To date, there are more than 4,000 Edible Schoolyard Network member programs in 54 countries.

“I am so honored to be receiving this award for the 25th anniversary of ISPA,” said Waters. “I am looking forward to speaking at this important gathering.”

The award is named in honor of the late spa pioneer, Alex Szekely. It is designed to recognize an individual who acts as a respected contributor to overall well-being, encouraging the renewal of mind, body and spirit – all of which are characteristics embodied by ISPA members worldwide.

The award will be presented to Waters by Szekely’s mother, Deborah Szekely.

“Alice Waters has climbed to the summit of worldwide culinary fame since starting Chez Panisse in a little house on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley,” said Szekely. “Along the way she’s done more than any single person to change the world of healthy, sustainable, immensely enjoyable dining as well as cooking at home. She also inspires many thousands of children each year through her Edible Schoolyard project to honor fresh and seasonal, locally sourced, honest simple food and all that it means to lifelong health. I am so proud to be able to call her my friend.”
