Sri Lanka Tourism targets UK winter travellers with new British Airways route

”Sri Lanka is opening up greater direct access from the UK this winter with the launch of a new British Airways service between London Gatwick and Colombo.

The new seasonal route begins on 23 October and will operate three times a week throughout the 2026/27 winter season, giving British holidaymakers a new direct option for reaching Sri Lanka during one of its key travel periods.

The new service comes as UK demand for Sri Lanka continues to grow. More than 170,000 UK visitors have travelled to the island so far in 2026, making the UK Sri Lanka’s second-largest source market, with a 10% share of all international arrivals.

Sri Lanka continues to capture the imagination of British travellers seeking more than a traditional long haul beach escape. The culturally rich island is bursting with experiences, from climbing the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress and spotting elephants and leopards on safari to surfing the Indian Ocean and travelling through the lush tea country of the central highlands.

Its rich heritage comes alive through ancient temples, UNESCO-listed sites, and historic cities while its mouthwatering culinary scene offers everything from aromatic curries and fresh seafood to colourful street food and contemporary dining in Colombo.

For those looking to slow the pace, Ayurveda and wellness are deeply rooted in the island’s traditions, complemented by the warmth of its renowned hospitality. Together, these experiences showcase the remarkable variety of Sri Lanka, where cuisine, adventure and wellbeing come together across one extraordinary destination.

Sarangi Thilakasena, Deputy Director of Marketing at the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, said:

“We are delighted to welcome British Airways’ new seasonal service between London Gatwick and Colombo. The UK is an important market for Sri Lanka, and this new route makes it even easier for British travellers to discover the island during the winter season.

“Sri Lanka offers an incredible diversity of experiences in one destination. From wildlife and rich culture to exceptional cuisine, mountains, wellness and beautiful beaches, there is something to inspire every type of traveller. We look forward to welcoming more British visitors this winter and sharing the warmth, hospitality and experiences that make Sri Lanka such a special destination.”

The British Airways service operates three times a week with World Traveller, World Traveller Plus and Club World cabins. Return fares start from £620, including taxes and carrier fees, subject to availability.

The launch comes ahead of World Travel Market London, taking place from 3–5 November 2026, where Sri Lanka Tourism will meet UK travel trade and media to showcase the destination and its latest developments in the British market. Sri Lanka Tourism will host a press conference on Wednesday 4 November, 1.30–3.30pm, in Albert Rooms 1 & 2, ICC Maritime Suite, ExCeL London. The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Hon. Prof. Ruwan Ranasinghe, will be among the speakers, alongside senior representatives from Sri Lanka’s tourism industry and airline partners.
