European aviation industry calls for competitiveness-focused EU ETS review

Leading organisations representing the European aviation industry have called on the European Commission to ensure that the upcoming review of the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) for aviation supports both climate objectives and the competitiveness of the sector.

In an open letter addressed to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Executive Vice-President Stéphane Séjourné, and Commissioners Wopke Hoekstra and Maroš Šefčovič, the industry outlined key priorities for the future development of the EU ETS framework.

The letter was jointly signed by the leaders of Airlines for Europe (A4E)ACI EuropeASDCANSO Europe and European Regions Airline Association (ERA), representing stakeholders across the European aviation ecosystem.

The organisations called on the Commission to maintain the current geographical scope of the EU ETS and avoid any unilateral expansion of the system beyond its existing coverage.

They also urged the European Union to reinforce the role of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) as the global carbon pricing framework for international air transport.

In addition, the signatories requested that revenues generated from aviation-related EU ETS activities be reinvested in the sector’s decarbonisation efforts.

According to the letter, priority areas for reinvestment should include support mechanisms for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and funding through the Innovation Fund, aimed at accelerating the development and deployment of low-carbon aviation technologies.

The industry organisations stated that the forthcoming EU ETS review provides an opportunity to advance aviation decarbonisation while safeguarding the competitiveness of European airlines, airports, manufacturers and air navigation service providers within the global market.
