The Best Tourism Villages initiative forms part of the Tourism for Rural Development Programme and seeks to leverage tourism as a catalyst for rural prosperity, resilience and wellbeing. The programme promotes the protection of landscapes, cultural diversity and traditional knowledge systems while aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals.
The initiative is structured around three pillars. The Recognition as Best Tourism Village component highlights rural destinations demonstrating excellence in preserving cultural and natural heritage, strengthening community-based values and advancing sustainability across economic, social and environmental dimensions.
The Upgrade Programme supports villages that do not yet meet all recognition criteria, providing tailored guidance and technical assistance to address identified gaps and strengthen tourism development strategies.
The Best Tourism Villages Network includes both recognized villages and those in the Upgrade Programme. It serves as a platform for knowledge-sharing, peer learning, partnerships and capacity-building across regions and sectors.
