Mandarin Oriental opens first hotel in Vienna’s historic First District

HONG KONG – Mandarin Oriental has officially entered the Austrian market with the opening of Mandarin Oriental, Vienna, a new luxury hotel located on the Ringstrasse in the city’s UNESCO-listed First District.

The property occupies a former courthouse originally built in the early 20th century by Austrian architect Alfred Keller. The building has been carefully restored and transformed by luxury interior design studio Goddard Littlefair, combining original architectural features with contemporary interiors.

Spanning four floors, the hotel offers 86 rooms and 52 suites designed as calm, residential-style spaces. The accommodations feature generous natural light, bespoke furnishings, soft neutral palettes, Secessionist-inspired fabrics and contemporary bathrooms. A restored internal courtyard sits at the heart of the property, while the arrival areas highlight sculptural chandeliers and the original grand staircase, preserving the character of the historic structure.

Under the culinary direction of Chef Thomas Seifried, Mandarin Oriental, Vienna introduces four dining venues that aim to reflect Vienna’s cosmopolitan profile. Each outlet focuses on seasonal ingredients and local influences interpreted through an international lens. The hotel positions this collection as setting “a new standard for contemporary gastronomy in the capital,” uniting Austrian heritage with a global perspective.

The spa at Mandarin Oriental, Vienna follows a holistic approach to wellbeing inspired by the city’s artistic and musical legacy. Treatments combine traditional Asian therapies with locally themed concepts, including waltz-inspired bodywork and gong sessions, designed to promote balance and relaxation for guests.

Art also plays a central role in the hotel’s identity. The signature Mandarin Oriental fan for Vienna has been reimagined by Austrian artist Peter Jellitsch as a contemporary artwork intended to bridge the brand’s Asian heritage with Vienna’s cultural history. The piece, described as “a modern symphony of contrast and harmony”, uses expressive brushstrokes over a geometric grid, drawing on Art Nouveau influences and Jellitsch’s own visual language. The chequerboard motif references architectural order, while the fluid colour gestures convey movement and energy, reflecting the blend of tradition and modernity that the hotel seeks to embody.

Positioned in one of Vienna’s most established cultural and commercial districts, Mandarin Oriental, Vienna adds new high-end capacity to the city’s luxury hotel offering, targeting visitors drawn by its central location, heritage setting and brand-led service standards.
