NEW YORK, NY – W Algarve announce that it has earned its third consecutive Green Key certification, reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility, sustainability, and conscious hospitality in Portugal’s southern coast.
Green Key is the leading standard for excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism industry. This award highlight’s the property’s commitment to its guests, that when choosing to stay at W Algarve, they are making a difference at an environmental and social sustainability level.
At W Algarve, sustainability is part of the guest experience and daily operation. The property is powered by 100% renewable energy sourced from Acciona, preventing the release of 185 tons of CO₂ each year. It features 144 rooftop solar panels for efficient water heating and offers 21 electric vehicle charging stations across the property to support greener mobility for guests and residents. The property has also eliminated most single-use plastics by providing glass water bottles, replacing takeaway packaging with paper containers, and installing filtered water dispensers throughout the property. Nespresso recently recognized W Algarve for recycling over 88 pounds of coffee capsules, an initiative that contributed to the donation of 2.15 million meals through local food banks.
Sustainability is also central to W Algarve’s culinary program. The menus across the six dining venues rotate seasonally to support local farmers and reduce the carbon footprint, with 90% of fish sourced directly from the Algarve coast. The ingredients used for each dish are utilized to its full potential, like turning leftover orange peels into a homemade compote, which is served at breakfast. The menus are also paperless, accessible via QR codes, which are also available on physical cubes in each room for guests to browse in leisure.
In each of the accommodations, smart technology is quietly at work, reducing energy use without guests having to lift a finger. Air conditioning automatically shuts off when windows are opened and corridor lights are motion-activated. The property also strictly uses sustainable amenities and has dual-flush toilets to minimize water waste. By simply enjoying their stay, guests are effortlessly contributing to a more sustainable future, without even having to think about it.
