Travel for free on local trains: Know more about RENFE’s ‘abono’ scheme

The national train company RENFE is extending its popular ‘abono’ scheme, allowing frequent travelers to potentially enjoy free rides on local trains.

This initiative is part of a government effort to encourage the use of public transportation over private vehicles.

Step 1: Download the RENFE App or Visit a Ticket Office

You can access the scheme by downloading the RENFE app from standard app stores or by visiting the ticket office at your local station.

For added convenience, the Maria Zambrano station in Malaga offers more customer service staff to assist you.

Using the phone app is more efficient, as it generates a QR code that serves as your ticket.

Step 2: Register and Secure Your Refundable Deposit

To participate, you must register by providing a copy of your ID and other necessary details.

A €10 deposit is required, which will be refunded if you complete at least 16 train journeys between September 11 and December 31.

If you pay the deposit by card, the refund will be automatic; if you pay in cash, you’ll need to submit a form to get your money back.

Step 3: Enjoy the Benefits

The scheme, first introduced in 2023, has been renewed due to its success in promoting public transport.

However, be aware that the Cercanías version of the scheme in Malaga is not interchangeable with the Cercanías version in Madrid, meaning you can only use it within your registered local area.

Why This Matters

This initiative not only helps frequent travelers save money but also supports the government’s efforts to reduce traffic congestion and pollution by encouraging the use of public transport.
