GLOBAL OTP SUMMARY – July 2024

On July 19, the aviation industry was thrown into disarray by a global IT outage stemming from a CrowdStrike and Microsoft software update error. The disruption resulted in the cancellation of over 5,000 flights worldwide, with thousands more delayed between July 19 and 21. Airlines and airports across North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific, heavily dependent on Microsoft systems, bore the brunt of the chaos. Meanwhile, Latin America and the Middle East & Africa experienced minimal impact. These disruptions were evident in the notable decreases in On-Time Performance (OTP) scores in the affected regions.

However, Saudia (SV) retained its position as the global leader in July, with an OTP of 88.15%, just a slight decline from last month’s performance of 88.22%. While some airlines at King Khalid International Airport (RUH) were disrupted by the IT outage, Saudi officials reported that operations continued as the airport used an alternative system. The airport secured the third-place position in the Global Airports category with an OTP of 83.27%, down by more than 2-points from June’s OTP of 85.60%.

Azul (AD) came in second place with an OTP of 85.20%, a slight improvement from the previous month’s OTP of 84.83%. Viracopos-Campinas International Airport (VCP), the main hub for Azul, finished the month in fourth place under the Medium Airports category. The airport turned in an OTP of 87.02%, also a slight improvement over last month’s OTP of 86.41%.

LATAM Airlines (LA) maintained its position in third place with an OTP of 84.65%, down slightly from 85.83% in June. Arturo Merino Benitez Airport (SCL), a hub for LATAM Airlines, concluded the month with an OTP of 80.62%.

Avianca (AV) came in fourth place with an OTP of 84.11%. This was more than 4-points improvement from its performance in June (79.97%). Bogota El Dorado International Airport (BOG), a hub for Avianca, dominated the Global Airports category with an OTP of 84.45%. This was more than 5-points improvement over June’s performance (79.12%).

Aeromexico (AM) secured the fifth-place position with an OTP of 81.51%. This was more than 4-points decrease from last month’s OTP of 86.18%. Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX) finished in sixth place under the Global Airports category with an OTP of 78.33%, more than 4-points decline from last month’s OTP of 82.64%.
