Madi Hiyaa, the first in the Maldives, wins the prestigious Prix Versailles 2024, celebrating its architectural excellence and exceptional culinary experience.
Madi Hiyaa has been distinguished with the illustrious Prix Versailles as one of the world’s most stunning restaurants for 2024. This notable honor recognizes establishments that excel in both architectural design and culinary artistry, positioning Madi Hiyaa among 16 outstanding venues globally. Remarkably, Madi Hiyaa is the first restaurant in the Maldives to achieve this recognition.
The Prix Versailles, celebrated for its emphasis on architecture and design across various domains, highlights the impact of the physical setting on the dining experience. Jérôme Gouadain, Secretary General of the Prix Versailles, commended the selected restaurants for their significant contributions to the industry.
Drawing inspiration from the Dhivehi language, where “Madi” means “ray” and “Hiyaa” translates to “shelter,” Madi Hiyaa pays tribute to the elegant rays migrating across the Indian Ocean. Designed by Nomadic Resorts, its striking bamboo ribcage structure mirrors the Pink Whiprays (Pateobatis fai) found in the nearby lagoon. This innovative design underscores Madi Hiyaa’s dedication to sustainability, showcasing bamboo as a rapidly renewable resource and effective carbon sink.
Situated at Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, Madi Hiyaa offers an overwater dining experience, complete with a sea saltwater infinity pool and overwater catamaran nets for panoramic sunset views. The interior blends modern sophistication with traditional Maldivian elements, featuring black bamboo-clad bars and service blocks against pale bamboo columns and timber decking.
Guests at Madi Hiyaa can savor exquisite Japanese cuisine, including expertly prepared Yakitori dishes, in an environment that harmonizes nature, culture, and architectural brilliance. This combination creates a dining experience that is not only memorable but also deeply connected to its surroundings.
The winners of the 2024 World Titles – Prix Versailles, Interior, and Exterior – will be announced at UNESCO Headquarters by late November, alongside the World’s Most Beautiful Hotels List 2024.
