Minor Hotels Partners with The Cavaleros Group to Launch South Africa Premiere NH Collection Hotel

Minor Hotels, a global hotel group with a portfolio exceeding 540 properties across 56 nations, is excited to reveal a new collaboration with The Cavaleros Group for a hotel management venture in Johannesburg, South Africa. This partnership marks the introduction of Minor Hotels’ NH Collection brand to the African market.

Starting July 1st, 2024, the group will oversee operations at a 329-room hotel situated in Sandton, Johannesburg’s bustling financial hub. Initially branded as NH Sandton, the hotel is slated for a comprehensive makeover before being rebranded as NH Collection Sandton.

Boasting three decades of operation, the hotel is a notable presence in Sandton, about twenty kilometers from O.R. Tambo International Airport. The NH Sandton will feature a variety of accommodations, including standard rooms, suites, one-bedroom suites, and the expansive 145 square-meter Royal Suite. Guests will enjoy amenities such as two restaurants, two bars, an executive lounge, conference facilities, a gym, and a spacious outdoor swimming pool.

Founded in South Africa in 1926, with its property division kicking off in 1967 by Cosmas Cavaleros, The Cavaleros Group is now led by Penny Cavaleros (CEO) and Alexi Cavaleros (Head of International Acquisitions). It is one of South Africa’s most prominent private property entities, engaging in the development and investment of a broad range of properties globally. This collaboration with Minor Hotels represents an exciting step into South Africa, a key market with significant growth potential for Minor Hotels, which already operates 27 hotels across eight African countries under its Anantara, Avani, and Elewana Collection brands.

The NH Collection’s portfolio boasts over 90 properties worldwide, positioned in prime city locations across Europe and the Americas. Having recently expanded into the Middle East and the Maldives, the brand is set to continue its growth with upcoming openings in Asia, Finland, and Qatar. This strategic alliance between Minor Hotels and The Cavaleros Group not only cements Minor Hotels’ presence in South Africa but also paves the way for future collaborative ventures across Africa.

William Heinecke, Chairman and Founder of Minor International, parent company of Minor Hotels, commented, “We are thrilled to sign this strategic partnership with The Cavaleros Group to launch NH and soon NH Collection in South Africa and with it launch our first property in the country. This property will join our growing portfolio of hotels in Africa, where our Anantara, Avani and Elewana brands are already present. We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership with Penny and the Cavaleros team.”

Penny Cavaleros, Chief Executive Officer of The Cavaleros Group, also commented, “The decision to partner with Minor Hotels for our Sandton Hotel and Africa was legendary for The Cavaleros Group. We, as a Group, identified certain asset classes within the property sector which we will aggressively pursue, hospitality being one with exponential growth into the African continent. Over the past three years we have engaged with all international hotel groups and concluded and recognised that Minor Hotels’ history, speed and culture is synonymous with our core Group values. We are currently considering several hospitality opportunities across the continent and have commenced our due diligence process.”

Minor Hotels operates 27 hotels and resorts under its Anantara, Avani, and Elewana Collection brands across eight countries in Africa, with more properties planned for the future.

The NH Collection boasts over 90 properties globally, situated in prime urban areas throughout Europe and the Americas. Recently, the brand expanded to the Middle East, introducing its first locations on the Palm Jumeirah in Dubai and in the Maldives last year. This year marks the brand’s debut in Asia with the NH Collection Chiang Mai in Thailand, and additional openings are expected in Finland and Qatar.
