NCL adjusts all 2024 Venice port calls

Norwegian Cruise Line is ditching port calls to Venice over the requirement to tender guests from outside the lagoon.

The cruise line has informed travel agent partners of the upcoming changes.

“Large cruise ships are required to anchor outside and utilise tender boats,” the line said.

“While we have made every effort to maintain these calls, the tender operation and overall experience falls short of the standard we aim to deliver.”

NCL ships this year will either call at Ravenna, which is two hours away from Venice or add a Croatia port call.

“We recognise Venice is one of the world’s greatest destinations and acknowledge the inconvenience and frustration this disruption may cause,” NCL added.

Norwegian Pearl’s calls from May 2024 will call at Ravenna, while scheduled stops on June 14 and October 4 will call at Rijeka, Croatia instead.

The government banned large cruise ships over 25,000 gross tonnes from entering the Lagoon.

Other cruise lines have shifted calls to mainland ports Ravenna and Marghera.

Venice is also introducing a day trip tourist tax starting this spring.

The €5 fee is valid on certain peak days to discourage overcrowding.
