Marriott International's purchase of the Hoteles City Express brand in Mexico has received regulatory approval from the country, with the sale expected to close in the second quarter. Approximately 150 hotels in 70 Mexican cities and three other Latin American countries will be rebranded as Marriott properties.

Cabana rentals are regularly selling out at luxury hotels, even when the cost is more than $1,000 a day, with Mutluhan Kucuk, managing director at Loews Miami Beach, noting that guests with cabanas spend up to 40% more on food and drinks than other guests. Cabanas, which may come with amenities such as air conditioning, television and showers, are popular for bachelor and bachelorette parties and other milestone occasions, as well as for day-trippers, who splurge on a one-day pass. Houston's hotel market was rated the worst in the US, according to a Trepp report, which found that one-third of the area's properties have had a decline in net cash flow growth and over two-thirds are at risk of defaulting on loans. The study also found that occupancy has a weighted average of only 53%, although the relocation of major business headquarters to the area and the upcoming NCAA Final Four may provide at least a short-term improvement.
