Historic tourism milestone for New York State

The New York State tourism industry welcomed a record 291.5 million visitors in 2022.

This marks the largest number of visitors in the state’s history.

It generated more than $78.6 billion in direct spending, Gov. Kathy Hochul said.

It represented a ‘staggering increase’ over 2021 and surpassed the previous 2019 record.

“New York’s pandemic recovery has been one for the history books, with an unprecedented 291 million visitors,” Governor Hochul said.

“In the three years since the pandemic ground tourism to a halt, we have made transformative investments to uplift businesses, and support workers in tourism and hospitality.”

Visitors are confirming what we’ve known all along – New York is the place to be.”

Last year, the statewide economic impact of tourism reached a record-high $123 billion, 4% over the $117.6 billion impact of 2019.

New York State also saw a 10% bump in visitation, compared to 2019.

Spending was up over 50% versus 2021.

In late 2021, Hochul launched the “Bring Back Tourism, Bring Back Jobs” recovery package, backed by a $450 million investment to support travel industry workers and small business support programs

The I LOVE NY marketing initiatives continued in 2022 to encourage travel throughout New York State, including specialized campaigns like the I LOVE NY Black travel program.
