Heathrow security staff postpone 31-day strike after getting improved pay offer

The planned 31-day strike by security guards at London’s Heathrow Airport has been postponed following an improved pay offer. The strike, which was initially scheduled to begin on June 24, will now only proceed for the remaining 29 days if the new pay deal is rejected after union members vote on it.

Over 2,000 members of the Unite union were expected to participate in the walkouts at Heathrow, posing potential disruption for millions of travelers during the busy summer travel season.

The strike dates announced are as follows: June 28 to 30, July 14 to 16 and 21 to 24, and July 28 to 31. Additionally, strikes would take place on August 4 to 7, 11 to 14, 18 to 20, and 24 to 27.

Terminal 3, which houses international carriers such as American Airlines and Virgin Atlantic, would have seen security officers joining their counterparts from British Airways’ primary hub at Terminal 5.

The decision to postpone the strike’s initial two days allows union members the opportunity to vote on the updated pay offer. If the offer is accepted, the strikes will be averted for now. However, should the offer be rejected, the 29-day strike could proceed, potentially causing significant disruptions for travelers relying on Heathrow Airport’s services.
