Ει βούλει καλώς ακούειν, μάθε καλώς λέγειν, μαθών δε καλώς λέγειν, πειρώ καλώς πράττειν, και ούτω καρπώση το καλώς ακούειν. (Επίκτητος)

Vietnam International Travel Mart promotes responsible and green tourism

The Vietnam International Travel Mart (VITM) 2022, with the theme “Vietnam’s Cultural Tourism,” has started with the aim to promote business actions and enhance awareness in the new context of the pandemic.

The event hosts 450 pavilions from 51 provinces and cities nationwide and 15 foreign countries and territories and is expected to attract over 60,000 visitors and representatives from 3,000 tourism businesses seeking opportunities to connect with local and international partners.

Tourism has made a significant contribution to the economic development not only in Vietnam but also in countries around the world. Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Nguyen Van Hung said that tourism is a “smokeless industry” that has boosted the country’s economy. The country received nearly 3.7 million arrivals for the year after reopening for tourism on March 15, 2022. The tourism industry has shown signs of recovery in the first quarter of 2022 with arrivals reaching 60 percent of pre-pandemic levels, surging almost 30 times compared to the same period last year.

However, the tourism industry will have to balance between quick growth and the preservation of culture, nature, and biodiversity. Ramla Khalidi, Resident Representative of UNDP Vietnam, said that this will be the main challenge for the tourism industry.

Vietnam aims to receive 8 million foreign arrivals and earn about 27 billion U.S. dollars in revenue this year, equivalent to 90.3 percent of pre-pandemic levels. The tourism sector is projected to return to pre-pandemic levels in 2025, with a further aim to attract 35 million foreign visitors by 2030. Tourism authorities are expecting a steady growth rate of 13-15 percent per year in the future.
