Boutique luxury DMC, Grand Africa Safaris, shares new Great Migration safari in Tanzania

The Great Migration is an annual wildlife phenomenon that sees millions of wildebeest and other animals following an endless migratory route across the plains of the Serengeti to the Masai Mara. It is a highly sought-after bucket list experience that attracts droves of travelers who flock to East Africa each year to witness it firsthand.

Boutique luxury safari company, Grand Africa Safaris, is widely considered the DMC of choice for creating world-class expeditions on the African continent and the Great Migration is no exception. With offices on the ground in both Cape Town and Arusha, the expert team knows exactly how to get clients into the very heart of the action of this truly wild annual event. From calving season in late-January to the treacherous river crossings in July to September and all the months in between, the migration offers something unique and extraordinary all year round.

“When someone mentions the Great Migration, most people think of the Mara river crossings which generally start in the north in late July,” explains Marcelo Novais, Business Development Manager at Grand Africa Safaris. “What a lot of people don’t know is that this natural phenomenon is a year-round spectacle with each month of the year offering a unique experience of the event.”

Especially designed for agents who want to encourage travel before the busy crossing season, the luxury travel and safari DMC has launched a 10-day Great Migration safari that sees clients visiting four wildlife meccas in Tanzania. The itinerary includes Lake Manyara, Tarangire National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater and ends in the Serengeti National Park, where they can witness the heaving plains of migratory animals – without the crowds.

“Grand Africa Safaris works with properties that are located in very exclusive areas with expert guides that will go far off the beaten track,” says Novais. “This way we manage to avoid spots that experience overcrowding. The luxury in Africa is, after all, not only about the lodges, but about how clients are able to experience witnessing the extraordinary wildlife in their natural environment.”

The exclusive properties for this itinerary include the opulent Chem Chem Lodge, andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge and One Nature Nyaruswiga where the team highly recommend a sunrise safari hot air balloon flight over the Serengeti to get a breathtaking perspective of the migration from above.

For agents with clients who want to travel during the crossing season, Sales Manager, Emma Perrin, recommends booking now for 2023 and 2024. “When booking the migration in the crossing season (July-October) it is imperative to book well in advance”, she says. “We recommend 12 to 18 months before travel. For couples, there are still luckily pockets of travel within the 2023 season but for family and friends traveling together, we would look to 2024.”
