Air Traffic Passenger Enplanements Up 86% YOY
Air Passenger Travel Between the United States and Europe up 217%
Data recently released by the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO) show that in October 2022:
U.S.-International air traffic passenger enplanements (APIS/I-92 arrivals + departures) totaled 17.4 million in October 2022, up 86% compared to October 2021. Enplanements reached 87% of pre-pandemic October 2019 volume, up from 85% in September.
Originating Non-Stop Air Travel in October 2022
- Non-U.S. Citizen Air Passenger Arrivals to the United States from foreign countries totaled 4.08 million, +104% compared to October 2021 and (-24.3%) compared to October 2019.
On a related note, overseas visitor arrivals (with stays of 1-night or more in the United States and visiting under certain visa types) (ADIS/ I-94) totaled 2.457 million in October 2022, the 12th consecutive month overseas visitor arrivals exceeded 1.0 million and the seventh consecutive month they exceeded 2.0 million. - U.S. Citizen Air Passenger Departures from the United States to foreign countries totaled 4.393 million, +65% compared to October 2021 and were "flat" compared to October 2019.
World Region Highlights (APIS/I-92 arrivals + departures)
- Total air passenger travel (arrivals and departures) between the United States and other countries were led by Mexico 2.724 million, Canada 2.214 million, the United Kingdom 1.612 million, Germany 907k and France 699k.
- International regional air travel to/from the United States:
Europe continued to strengthen, totaling 5.829 million passengers, up 217% over October 2021, and down only (-14.9%) from October 2019.
South/Central America/Caribbean totaled 3.811 million, up 30% over October 2021, and up 0.5% compared to October 2019.
Asia totaled 1.337 million passengers, up 294% over October 2021, but still down (-56%) from October 2019.
- Top U.S. ports serving international locations were New York (JFK) 2.51 million, Miami (MIA) 1.74 million, Los Angeles (LAX) 1.53 million, Newark (EWR) 1.09 million and Chicago (ORD) 1.00 million.
- Top foreign ports serving U.S. locations were London Heathrow (LHR) 1.31 million, Toronto (YYZ) 949 thousand, Cancun (CUN) 827 thousand, Paris (CDG) 638 thousand, and Mexico City (MEX) 628 thousand.

The APIS based I-92 system provides air traffic data on the following parameters: number of passengers, by country, airport, scheduled or chartered, U.S. Flag, foreign flag, citizens and non-citizens.
