Mexico sees prominent growth in global tourism in September

Although Mexico failed to arrive at pre-pandemic numbers, it experienced striking growth in global tourism in September.

As per a study from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), 2.77 million international travelers visited Mexico in September this year, marking a 12.9 percent increase from last year.

September’s totals were still down by 8.8 percent compared to 2019. 1.63 million tourists stayed at least one night in Mexico in September, which is a 27.1 percent boost compared to 2021.

Travel expenditure also increased. Mexico earned $1.8 billion in September, with average spending for arriving air travelers reaching $1,057 in September, which is an increase from the $1,123 average in September 2021.

Altogether, the INEGI discovered that 27.5 million international tourists visited Mexico during the first nine months of the year, marking a 22.4 percent enhancement compared to the equivalent period in 2021. In 2019, Mexico greeted 32.8 million tourists during the first nine months of the year.

Although the total number of arrivals dropped compared to 2019, spending statistics for the first nine months of this year went up from $16.9 billion to $19.3 billion, partly due to inflation and a higher cost of living.

Popular Mexican Caribbean destinations like Cancun, Riviera Maya, Isla Mujeres, Tulum, Chetumal and Holbox recorded a collective 17 million tourist arrivals during the period of January to September this year.
