The Most Important Flight: ALTA launches project in partnership with Augusto Cury that prioritizes integral health in aviation

Brasília, September 20, 2022. Guided by the commitment to work to continue raising aviation safety standards and ESG-oriented commitments, ALTA launched on Monday (19), in Brasília, a project in partnership with the Brazilian psychologist, psychiatrist, professor and writer Augusto Cury, which will focus on knowing fundamental aspects of mental and emotional health and how to act preventively to maintain the well-being of employees, partners and users of the civil aviation industry.

Since the end of 2019, the world population has been experiencing atypical days. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the life and routine of many people in this period and raised several debates that were previously forgotten. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the pandemic has triggered a 25% increase in the prevalence of anxiety and depression worldwide. Therefore, this project seeks to concretize, in a real and professional way, what appears more and more each day in the media, in families, in friendships, pointing out that all professionals, regardless of their area of work, need to take care of their mental health. It is time to face the theme in a responsible way. After all, we are all human.

Enthusiastic about the subject, José Ricardo Botelho, executive director and CEO of ALTA, highlighted the importance of the theme for the strengthening of the civil aviation industry. "Year after year, we see how our industry strengthens to achieve a stronger and more efficient future, where more people make use of the safest means of transportation there is. Addressing the topic of mental health, focused on prevention and with the importance it deserves, is fundamental under the aspect of human factors. This, in turn, is an intrinsic part of the consistent effort to continue to raise safety standards in aviation. When a person feels good, he behaves even better, produces more, and generates more efficiency". When we see growing numbers of, for example, undisciplined passengers, we know that this behavior has a root and that it is the responsibility of everyone, as a society, to expand the knowledge about the concepts of mental and emotional well-being", emphasized Botelho.

According to Augusto Cury, the emotion management project in partnership with ALTA is fundamental to work with professionals in the aviation industry. "Our first project will be the mind; mind will work with emotions. Emotion is a fickle and sometimes irresponsible pilot. When it pilots us through love, tranquility and affection, the sensation is excellent", said Augusto Cury.

For the director of operations and safety, Virginio Corrieri, ALTA is aligned with the theme and created this project always with the intention of providing increasingly safer aviation. "ALTA is proud to make this important project take off, anticipating and providing all aviation stakeholders with a unique experience through the partnership signed with Dr. Augusto Cury", highlights Corrieri.

The Pandemic caused an unprecedented crisis in aviation worldwide and the mental health theme has been recurrent in recent events, especially those dealing with safety, such as the ALTA Pan American Aviation Safety Summit, held in June this year in São Paulo. Pilots, co-pilots, flight attendants, flight mechanics, air traffic controllers, passengers, in short, all those who make up the corporate chain of the aviation industry.

"It is an ESG issue, in fact, studies by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) show that ESG practices increase even industry financial efficiencies by 3 to 19%. This happens in professional and personal aspects" Botelho said.

ABOUT ALTA - ALTA collaborates with different organizations in terms of safety, for example, the partnership with ICAO's North America, Central America and the Caribbean Regional Office, which will be developing a safety awareness week in December this year to address different points of view of operational safety management. In this event, the theme "Human Factors" will be taken into consideration and ALTA will present the progress of this project. The course will cover self-awareness of emotions, multifocal intelligence, thought patterns, behavior profiling, self-regulation, managing differences, meditation, change management, and many others.

ALTA invites the industry to embark on this flight. More information is available at ALTA's Education Hub: https://alta.aero/en/education/.
