Tropical storm Mulan likely to cause heavy rainfall in Taiwan

A tropical depression in the South China Sea developed into Tropical Storm Mulan Tuesday.

Although not expected to affect Taiwan directly, the storm is likely to bring torrential rainfall to central and southern parts of the county on Wednesday. It has been confirmed by the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The storm was residing at about 930 Km southwest of Eluanbi as of 2pm on Tuesday. This is the southernmost tip of Taiwan.

As mentioned in a statement by the weather bureau, the storm was drifting towards the northwest at a speed of 25 km per hour. It packed sustained winds of 65kmph and gusty spells up to 90 kmph.

Mulan is the seventh tropical storm in the year which creates moist conditions. It can also cause intermittent rainfall in the southeastern and southern areas of Taiwan while moving towards southern China.

On the other side, western Taiwan and the mountainside areas in the northeast could experience afternoon thunderstorms. There may also be bright sunny skies in the other areas as stated by the weather bureau.

There is also a forecast of strong windy spells in the coastal areas in northern and southern Taiwan on Wednesday. High waves are also likely to lash in the southern areas and outlying Penghu County, Orchid Island and Green Island.

From August 11 through August 16, the weather across the island may be dry except the western, northeastern and the mountainous areas of eastern Taiwan. These places may experience sporadic thunderstorms.
