Seasonality has always played a huge role in tourism. In 2021, the normal periodic pattern for nights spent at EU tourist lodging establishments came nearer to the pre-pandemic arrangements of 2019.
This is after the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic triggering the seasonal bias to become even more noticeable in 2020. It is below 3% of the total yearly nights spent during April and May that particular year. Then again, 24% of the total nights were spent in August, which is the top month.
In 2020, the pandemic brought in an excess of 50% drop in both comings and nights spent at EU tourist lodging establishments, compared to 2019. In 2021, in spite of upsurges of over 25% compared to 2020, the figures of influxes (-42%) and nights spent (-37%) still failed to touch the levels of 2019.
