Next week in Manhattan, Marriott will inaugurate a posh new Ritz Carlton hotel, marking a bet on the huge rise in luxury travel and the return of the optimistic business travelers in the fall of 2022.
On Tuesday, Tony Capuano, Marriott CEO told the CNBC that the new hotel has got 10,000 square feet of space for meetings, a 7,000-square-foot space for spa, and outlets dedicated to food and beverage. Tony said that it’s positioned rightly to do the justice to that pivot from leisure travel to business.
The first appearance of the 106th Ritz Carlton comes as New York City is experiencing a revival in tourist inflow. In the early days of the pandemic, the city witnessed tourism to get dried up as New York turned out to be the first epicenters of the virus outbreak. Now once again, travelers are returning in huge numbers and more developers are signing new contracts.
Capuano said that in New York’s history, 2019 was the best year. It had more than 66 million visitors. There’s a call that in 2022, the city will get back to about 85% of that.
At present, New York City hotel occupancy rates are the third-strongest in the United States, at 83%, as per STR, a hospitality analytics provider. The top markets are Maine, Portland, and San Diego, California. The rebound of New York marks a powerful turnaround from the last two years when beach destinations won out.
