As per the UNWTO’s World Tourism Barometer, global tourism witnessed a 182% year-on-year growth during January-March this year, with destinations universally welcoming around 117 million worldwide arrivals in contrast to 41 million in the first quarter of 2021.
Of the additional 76 million international arrivals during the first three months of this year, around 47 million arrivals were witnessed in March, which meant that the recovery is slowly acquiring speed.
As per the UNWTO statistics, all through the first quarter of this year, Europe welcomed nearly four times of international arrivals equivalent to the first quarter of 2021, and the results were driven by robust intra-regional demand.
In both the Americas, influxes more than doubled during the period of the same three months. Nonetheless, entrances in Europe and the Americas still remained 43% and 46% lower than the 2019 levels, respectively.
The Middle East and Africa witnessed vigorous growth in the first quarter of this year compared to last year. However, arrivals remained 59% and 61% lower than the levels of 2019 levels, correspondingly.
Asia and the Pacific regions documented a 64% upsurge compared to 2021; however, levels were 93% lower than 2019 numbers.
