Set in a 20th-century neoclassical manor, Oakwood Suites & Studios Dupont Circle Washington DC was previously known as Ampeer Residences. This historic property was once owned by socialite Eleanor Josephine Medill “Cissy” Patterson, and the contemporary manor has played host to presidents and pioneers, from President Calvin Coolidge to aviator Charles Lindbergh. “As one of the only two remaining Gilded Age mansions on Dupont Circle, we wanted to honor the classic elements of the past and present—balancing the modern with heritage and the simple with the ornate—to create a property that’s truly unique to Washington, DC,” said Frank Saul, CEO, Saul Urban, the owner of the property.
The dual-branded property houses 92 suites and studios alongside a landmark event venue, Patterson Mansion. The property can accommodate short or long stays, offering a unique dual-brand experience of Oakwood Suites and Oakwood Studios respectively, across two separate wings. “We were captivated by the rich history of the Patterson Mansion and the notable characters who once called 15 Dupont Circle home,” Saul said. “It was important for us to maintain the property’s historical elegance while reimagining the mansion as a sophisticated modern-day living space. Our goal was to imbue the design with a mixture of contemporary and heritage touches to create an elegant yet timeless environment.”
The Patterson Mansion was first designed by notable architect Stanford White in 1903, but when Saul Urban took over the space in 2014 and added an additional tower to the mansion, they paid special attention to ensure that the mansion remained the focus of attention, Saul explained.
“In collaboration with interior designer Darryl Carter, we sought to establish the common spaces as a modern venue for Washington, DC, where guests would feel comfortable gathering, working and entertaining,” Saul said. “To complement the Patterson Mansion’s soaring ceilings and overall grandeur, we conceived of a serene interior featuring neutral hushed palettes with washes of color alongside a well-edited mix of modern and heritage forms.”
The property’s comprehensive amenities include a foyer lounge, library, social kitchen, fitness center, as well as a charming event space, Patterson Mansion. A versatile space with soaring ceilings and intricate design details complete with a built-in bar, Patterson Mansion is primed for intimate events or grand occasions for up to 100 guests, hosted in a private mansion to call your own.

“We wanted to honor Eleanor ‘Cissy’ Patterson who called the mansion home for so many years. Her life achievements as the first woman editor and newspaper publisher in the U.S. served as an inspiration for the property’s design. In fact, guests will find a stylized portrait of Cissy in the second-floor library, hanging in the same spot that she wed Polish Count Josef Gizycki in 1904,” Saul added.
