NEW YORK - Ca’ di Dio, the only 5-star hotel to open in Venice in 2021 and a member of the VRetreats group of hotels, is now part of the Considerate Collection of Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH), in recognition of its commitment to sustainability and social impact measures.
Already part of SLH, Ca' di Dio has succeeded in meeting the strict criteria of the Considerate Collection, which includes community impact, preservation of local culture, environmental awareness and sustainability systems (as established by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, the international non-profit established by the United Nations Environment Program).
“I am very proud of this important recognition, which rewards our commitment as a group, and the work of our collaborators," explains Christophe Mercier, Manager of the hotel. "Ca' di Dio has a strong focus on sustainability. We want guests to feel at home here, and to know they have made a responsible choice for the environment and our future.”
Sustainability was a top priority in Ca' di Dio's design, led by renowned Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola, and the hotel invested in several facilities and systems that limit its environmental impact. For instance, the hotel uses lagoon water in innovative ways to save heat and water. These measures are estimated to save 20% of energy (compared to traditional systems), and eliminate roughly 110 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
Respect for the city and its people is also at the forefront of the hotel's ethos. The hotel collaborates with Malefatte Venezia, a fashion brand that helps reintegrate prisoners into society. Together with Ca' di Dio, the brand has created sustainable gifts, such as organic cotton T-shirts, bags recycled from posters, and notebooks covered with wallpaper left over from the hotel rooms. In addition, the hotel staff wear shoes by the Veneto-based company Dress to Live, which are made from waste such as fishing nets, fabric scraps and industrial plastic.
Daniel Luddington, VP of Development of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, explains: "Given the difficulties that the hospitality industry is still facing, we are proud to see more SLH hoteliers passionately moving forward on their sustainable journey. Ca' di Dio is a shining example of a small luxury hotel making a big difference."
