Additional Rail Service Takes a Giant Leap

Additional rail service moves one step forward to arrive at Birmingham with a bill currently in the US House of Representatives.

The US Senate recently passed the infrastructure bill.

The bill approves of 1 trillion USD for spending on roads, broadband, electric, bridges, water and rail infrastructure.

It also includes 66 billion USD for passenger rail programs, operations and projects across the nation.

While the House has the authority to overturn the bill, the Southern Rail Commission, however, said it anticipates the ultimate passage of the bill.

Mississippi Commissioner for the SRC, Knox Ross said that this bill will allow unforeseen expansion and development for passenger rail services in the South especially Alabama.

The city has many opportunities for connections through Birmingham.

Amtrak has proposed to plan to increase rail service to 47 out of the top 50 metros including Birmingham.

The city connects 160 communities across the country by building new or improving rail corridors in over 25 states.

Amtrak spokesperson Marc Magliari said that there is only one train between Birmingham and Atlanta.

There is need for one more train in that route.

Ross said that the plan opens up possibilities for one or more additional trains each day between Birmingham and Atlanta on to Charlotte.

He also proposed some more additional routes but that from Birmingham to Atlanta is the most obvious and expensive.

Ross also added if the bill passes connecting of the cities like Birmingham, Montgomery, Nashville and others will be connected in the next five to ten years.

This will make Birmingham more livable by attracting new businessmen and residents.
