WANDER IN THE WHIMSY

Colton House Hotel, an 80-suite luxury property opens its doors on Austin’s hip South Congress Ave. Drawing inspiration from its distinctive surroundings, the property showcases the captivating spirit of the Lone Star State and pays due respect to Texas’s rich history through locally handpicked art and design features. Pioneering the suite-based hotel concept at The Guesthouse Hotel in Chicago, Inherit Hotel Group brings the same approach to Colton House Hotel, combining residential luxuries with upscale boutique hotel amenities and staff that invites guests to “wander home” in a modern, yet authentic Texas setting.

“We wanted to evoke a timeless aesthetic, one which would imbue elegance, curiosity and whimsy, as well as pay homage to Texas culture,” said Simona Krug, head of design/co-owner of the Colton House Hotel.

All suites range from 460-1,170 sq. ft., significantly larger than a standard hotel room. Studios, one-, two- and three- bedroom suites are well equipped with a full modern kitchen or kitchenette, living room and many include in-room washers and dryers. The spacious rooms allow for a variety of travelers, including families with small children and pets, groups of friends or visitors on business. As the modern traveler seeks a more spacious stay with a dedicated remote work area, or multiple rooms to take video calls while children play in a second space, Colton House Hotel offers plenty of options.

“It was important to us to draw upon local history and culture when curating the design,” Krug noted. “We wove and layered many local antique pieces throughout each space to create a narrative native to Austin and Texas. And all of our artwork, from the historic photographs to the one-of-a-kind pieces drawn and painted by local artists, to the music memorabilia in the coffee bar chronicles the rich history of our locale.”

Property amenities include Simona’s Coffee + Cocktail Bar, a casual space curated to bring guests and locals a variety of luxury coffee, teas, wine and other spirits by Austin’s finest distributors. The Hotel and Simona’s have also both partnered with local restaurants and caterers to bring in an eclectic mix of the highest-caliber local Austin food. Guests can also sip their cocktails and enjoy light bites upstairs in The Parlor, an elegant lounge area with leather couches and additional seating for small gatherings.

“The hotel was specially curated for each and every individual who chooses to experiences it. Every space whispers a different narrative and evokes a subtle visceral response to make each guest feel at home and that they belong here,” Krug said.

The heart of the hotel is The Backyard, an outdoor space spanning 5,000 sq. ft. and designed around three 80-year-old heritage live oak trees, an ideal setting for small events. A spacious deck with fire pit and naturally designed seating lead into The Lawn, an open area to play bocce ball, croquet, lawn bowling and more. A heated outdoor swimming pool completes the experience and will offer full service and private cabanas. Above the sprawling outdoor area sits a 1,200-sq.-ft. Penthouse event space is connected to an expansive rooftop terrace with views of the Texas Hill Country and the Austin Skyline.

Off the Lobby, the Club Room is tailor-made for casual nightcaps or small groups, while kids can also enjoy their very own corner featuring a French-inspired playtable, eclectic toys and children’s books and games. The Library is a bespoke, textured space home to grand bookshelves, a custom black walnut table for up to 16, and all the audio visual tools needed for an intimate meeting. The Fitness Center, located on the second floor, provides Peloton bikes, a full yoga studio and additional state-of-the-art equipment with stunning views.

“The beauty of the hotel is the result of dozens of dedicated people who collectively came together to help create something truly special and unique in Austin,” Krug said. “The saying, ‘It takes a village’ absolutely applies to the design and creation of Colton House.”
