Spain imposes new stricter rules to curb virus spreading

Spain issues new restrictions that are affecting most of the tourists in many of the popular holiday hotspots in the country. The Balearic Islands are going to implement face masks both indoors and outdoors, which includes walking on the street and on the beach.

A curfew in the Balearics, which includes Ibiza and Majorca, also prevents social meeting between different households between 1am and 6am, while bars and restaurants must close at 1am.

The Balearics tourism minister Iago Negueruela said more restrictions are likely to be reintroduced if the cases do not go down, adding that they are studying different restrictions against excesses and control of public spaces.

The cases in the Balearics are soaring with Ibiza hit the worst – the island’s incidence rate is currently 1,249 per 100,000 people, more than double the UK, while the islands as a whole are 798 per 100,000.

Tenerife’s COVID-19 alert level is now at the highest, with tourists needing proof of vaccine, negative Covid test or Covid antibodies to enter bars, restaurants and attractions. The curfew have also been enforced in Catalonia from midnight.

Spain’s Covid cases have been rising. The country reported nearly 44,000 daily cases on July 13, its highest ever total during the pandemic.

It is feared that Spain could be added to the new “amber plus” list which would mean even fully vaxxed Brits will have to quarantine for 10 days back in the UK.

However, the Department for Transport has since told the travel industry that tourists returning from Spain won’t be slapped with new restrictions imminently, with the next update in August.
