Woodlands Glencoe named ‘UK Small Business of the Year’

A Highland estate that transformed from an arable farm into a luxury tourism destination has been named the ‘UK Small Business of the Year’.

The family-run venture Woodlands Glencoe surpassed more than 3100 other entrants and 132 regional and national award winners to win the accolade in the annual Celebrating Small Business Awards, run by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).

The business includes an estate, café (currently closed), activity centre, golf course and 17 luxury lodges with hot tubs. It bagged the top award due to its growth rate and commitment to the local community. It grew its revenue from £45,000 in 2009 to £900,000 in 2020, offering activities free to local fundraising groups.

Besides winning the overall UK Small Business of the Year award, Woodlands Glencoe received the UK award for business and product innovation.

Woodlands Glencoe’s development director James Young said, “At our heart, we’re a family firm that has spent more than a decade building and diversifying our business. That has meant a huge amount of hard work and careful planning, and it is phenomenal to see all of this hard work recognized by FSB.”

FSB Highlands and Islands area lead Tanja Lister praised Woodlands Glencoe as “world class” saying, “The Young family has done a truly amazing job and they are a credit to our region.”
