Hampi braces for second wave of corona with protective measures

With the second wave of Covid-19 setting in, the tourism sector is apprehensive about the same. Hampi, which otherwise would have witnessed tourists from around the world to see its magnificent architectural gems, exhibits a deserted look today. Concern among guides, small businesses and vendors at this historical site is apparent, taking into consideration the noticeable decline in the number of tourists, which could go down further if corona cases continue to rise.

In February, more than 40,000 tourists visited Hampi, which had gradually started to see a revival in footfalls. However, the number almost halved to 20,000 in March. With mercury levels increasing, a spike in Covid cases could initiate a big blow for local businesses. Nevertheless, the government has already taken measures to control the second wave.

Since a lot of tourists visit Hampi, the primary health center at the destination is ensuring a better environment for them. The PHC has all the facilities, including checking for Covid-19 like RAT test, along with two mobile vehicles.

“Footfalls in Hampi dwindled in March. This can be linked not only to the pandemic but the summer heat which also discourages visitors. However, the administration has taken all precautionary measures and visitors need not worry about Covid-19,” an official reassured.

Bharat Patil, a local vendor, said that daily, the number of tourists is decreasing, which is indeed a worrying sign. Last year, the pandemic brought losses for businesses, which saw some improvement over the last few months. The second wave, however, is expected to bring damage again in its wake. Therefore, the administration needs to make sure that all safety measures are in place for improving tourism.
