Generation Z to perk up 2021’s tourism revival

An assessment was done to gain a deeper understanding of the consumer's actions, what are they hoping to do, book and see when they get to travel once again after the third lockdown along with the missed out opportunities throughout 2020.

The generations Y and Z are looking to enjoy some jostle and the bright city lights in their vacations. Around 52% of travelers less than 35 years of age have mentioned that they wanted to visit a UK city this year.

The study has found that of the 200 respondents, 49% were all set for a UK holiday in 2021, compared to 45% who were planning to go abroad. Only 5% are hoping both for a domestic as well as an international trip.

The Great British seaside has exposed itself as a place most sought-after in general. Almost 64% have said that they were keen to visit a UK coastline however, due to many destinations like Cornwall have shared that they are completely booked in 2021 for peak times, those who said they want to visit rural areas (21.6%) or have a city break (10.6%), may be more in luck when booking presently.

Enjoying food in the restaurant is the most missed activity of lockdown. Around 45.5% have shared that they just can’t wait to start eating out again when outdoor hospitality restarts in April. 58% have said that restaurants and 28.5% denoted pubs as their most preferred choice when it comes to eating and drinking out. An additional 13.5% were quite thrilled to go to a concert or gig, as getting outdoors (7.5%), having a spa day (6%) and watching live sports (5.5%) were some other top activities to be considered. Exploring a new destination is the travel habit that’s being most missed out by consumers, with 33% of respondents stating they are getting mad to visit somewhere new, indicating that the public is excited to get out and explore less popular pockets of the UK when they can.

To quote Marc Saunders, group head of marketing and communications at Splendid Hospitality, “These survey results showcase a strong demand for UK trips this year, with many more likely to give up hope on jetting off following the recent introduction of the £5,000 fines for those travelling without need. We have already seen encouraging demand for our city centre hotels in smaller cities, such as York and Oxford, and therefore we hope to continue to capitalize on those seeking to discover new destinations this year.”
